The 2009 Swish 3-on-3 Tournament is Hoping for larger "Slam Dunk" August 8-9th, Bonners Ferry, ID

Swish 3-on-3 Tournament - Bonners Ferry, Idaho

The 2009 Swish 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is Hoping for an even larger "Slam Dunk" August 8 - 9, 2009, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Mark your calendars and join the fun at the 2nd annual two-day hoopfest in the main streets of one of Idaho's friendliest cities, Bonners Ferry.   This year‘s happening is being held the weekend of August 8-9th, 2009

Swish Basketball Tournament LogoThe first 30-on-3 Swish tournament, in 2008, drew 62 teams from Canada and the Inland Northwest. They played on 20 hoops on Main Street in Bonners Ferry's.  Brett Brown, who organized last year's tournament, will again direct this year's Swish hoopfest.

"It was a pipe dream of mine that came through because this community pitched in and made it happen," said Brown. "There's no other way it would have worked. I was overwhelmed at how everyone jumped in, took charge and made this happen almost effortlessly. Everything came together perfectly."

This year's tournament may prove to be a larger and more elaborate tournament.  Expectations are as high as over 125 teams!  Brown is looking to have more experienced referees and monitors working games for younger teams. He also wants volunteer committees to take charge more than last year.

Support your community and make donations and/or volunteer for this great event!

Coeur d' Alene is once again Praised by a National Magazine! This time it was "Every Day" with Rachel Ray..

Downtown Coeur d'Alene Idaho & Lake Coeur d'AleneAnother National Magazine Lauds Coeur d'Alene, ID

This piece was done to highlight travel destinations for tourists looking to find getaways off the beaten path.

The famous cook Rachel Ray praised Coeur d'Alene, ID  in the April edition of her 'Every Day' magazine for its beauty and charm in a one-page photograph essay.

Coeur d'Alene's page features a silhouette of a kayaker, plus pictures of Bella Rose Cafe, ROW Adventures and the Roosevelt Inn Bed and Breakfast.

This article puts Coeur d'Alene back in national headlines along with the recent pieces in USA Today.

Bella Rose Cafe - Coeur d'Alene IdahoRay's monthly magazine has a circulation of about 1.5 million, and most say the publicity can't do anything but help Coeur d'Alene's economy.   Rachel Ray may not be an Oprah but she has a very large following that will definitely pay attention.

So, I guess this cat is out of the bag!  Just how long could we keep this lakes and mountains paradise a secret!   OK, so it's been out of bag for quite some time... 100% growth in 15+/- years!

Top 10 Tips for Keeping Your Computer Running Smoothly - Computer Maintenance

Top 10 Tips for Keeping Your Computer Running Smoothly - Computer Maintenance

Business Man frustrated with Computer

I constantly have friends, colleagues and family members begging me to help them with their computers.  More often than not, the problems they have come from improper regular maintenance, not cleaning out their Cash or defraging, defunct Anti-Virus and Firewall Blocker programs, improperly shutting down, power surges, etc....

Following these simple tips should help prevent most of those annoying and avoidable computer problems.  ALSO, I want to emphasize two of the biggest "Tear Jerkers" .... BACK-UP, BACK-UP, BACK-UP (see #3) and DO NOT LOOSE or THROW OUT your SOFTWARE DISCS (especially the ones that came with your computer).... Keep them safe and dry.  You WILL need them at some point in time (see #10)!!!

1. Never, turn your computer off with the power switch UNTIL Windows has shut down. The exception to this rule is when your computer locks up and your hard drive is not running (hard drive light is not blinking).   If this happens, you can turn the power off without harmful effects to the hard drive. As cutting the power can also result in lost data or Windows files, you should only do this when you have to.

Following this rule will prevent permanent hard drive defects caused by the hard drive heads contacting the surface of the drive disc, and it will prevent a host of Windows problems.
Whenever possible, recover from crashes by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time. Press them again to reboot your computer.

Woman Tearing Her Hair Out2. Never unplug peripherals from the computer when it is powered up. Unplugging with the power on can short out the connector socket or the motherboard. The only exception to this rule is if you know a peripheral is "hot pluggable". If you do not know what "hot pluggable" means then ignore this exception.

3. Backup, backup, backup, any data you cannot afford to lose to at least two separate physical drives. So backup data to external hard drives, Zip disks, CD-RWs etc.
The time to backup is when you create something you can't afford to lose. Don't wait until tomorrow.

4. Purchase an UPS(uninteruptable power supply) for your computer. This will keep your computer from crashing during power outages, and will protect your computer from low and high voltage occurrences.
An UPS is far superior to a surge protector and will save your computer from almost any type of power disaster. (See #1 above for what happens when your computer crashes.)

5. Run Scandisk and Defragment at least once a month. This will keep your hard drive healthy and prevent crashes. Alternatively, purchase Norton Utilities and use it to keep your hard drive healthy.

6. Do keep at least 300 MBs of your C: drive free for Windows to use. If you use Windows XP or Vista then you should have 400-600 MBs of free space on your C: drive.
If you do not have enough free space you will choke Windows and it will start dumping data to your hard drive, or it will just get really, really, slow.
Use the ADD/Delete tool in the Windows Control Panel to delete unneeded programs from your drive.
You can also use Cleansweep included in Norton Utilities to clean up your drive. If you do use Cleansweep or another hard drive cleaner, do not delete shared files unless you back them up. The cleaners do a rotten job of knowing if another program uses shared files.

7. Do not let a lot of programs load up when you start your computer. They use valuable memory and Windows Resources (Windows internal workspace).
All programs in your Windows System Tray (in the lower left of your screen) are running on your computer. Close them if you don't need them or run them and configure them not to load when you boot up.
Other programs running in the background can be found by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time.

8. Use a virus checker regularly. Everyone should use a virus checker. The best type of protection is continuous monitoring from a dedicated anti-virus program.  The second best thing is to use is the free reputable online virus checkers.

Man doing the Happy Dance9. If you have a high speed Internet connection you need a firewall program. A firewall program keeps those who want to hijack your computer from gaining access to your system. You really do not want someone else running your computer.
Purchase and run a Firewall program. Your firewall should boot up with your computer to protect it from invasion.  Do not think you are safe from hackers!! Hackers use search programs to seek out computers at random. Get a firewall program and use it.

10. Keep track of the software disks you receive with your computer and new peripherals. These disks contain valuable software drivers and programs for Windows and are needed when Windows must be reloaded. Keep these disks and your Windows software disks in a safe, dry, place -- you never know when you will need them.

So, be happy... Stop pulling your hair out, use these simple steps and these computer maintenance tips will hopefully keep you out of trouble.

"Wine for the Trail" Benefit - North Idaho Centennial Trail

Be sure to attend the "Wine for the Trail" Benefit - Benefiting the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation!

Centennial Trail - Silvers Beach - Lake Coeur d'AleneAll about the Trail:  The North Idaho Centennial Trail is a NON-MOTORIZED, multi-use recreational trail, which meanders for 24 miles from the state line at the Idaho/Washington border to beautiful Higgens Point, six miles east of Coeur d'Alene.

This scenic trail runs along the Spokane River to Post Falls where it runs through neighborhoods and eventually to wooded areas leading to Coeur d'Alene. At the west end of Coeur d'Alene the trail again meets the Spokane River and follows it to the pristine Lake Coeur d'Alene. The trail then follows the lake shoreline to Higgens Point, an Idaho State Park, which draws throngs of spectators in the late fall and early winter to view the annual visit of Bald Eagles as they migrate south.

This scenic trail is composed primarily of Class I separated and paved trail with some small segments of Class II trail. The trail has numerous rest areas, scenic views and historical interpretative signs to add to the enjoyment of one of the most beautiful trail systems in the country. The trail, which was built by dedicated public funds, has received national acclaim; being designated a Millennium Trail by Hillary Clinton in 1999.

Centennial Trail - North Idaho - Coeur D'Alene, IdahoThe Prairie Trail Paved in the summer of 2008, the Prairie Trail is the newest addition to the North Idaho Centennial Trail System.  The 4 mile spur follows the old Union Pacific railroad from it's intersection with the Centennial Trail at the Seltice Way/ I-90 bridges northwest to Huetter Rd.  Along the way the Prairie Trail connects over 6 neighborhoods, 6 schools, and the Kroc Community Center to the Centennial Trail and the Coeur d'Alene downtown corridor.  The trail itself is 16 feet wide, 4 feet wider than the original trail.

The Centennial Trail System The North Idaho Centennial Trail continues across the Washington border as the Spokane River Centennial Trail.  Under separate jurisdiction the Spokane River Centennial Trail continues for 37 miles through Spokane west to 9 Mile.  In total the two trails combined provide over 60 miles of continuous trail for safe recreation and alternative transportation.  The North Idaho Centennial Trail System offers accessibility to walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages and abilities.

The North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation was established in 1989 as a non-profit organization to oversee the maintenance, stewardship, and continued improvements of the trail.

The Foundation's work is funded entirely through memberships, donations and grants. Please consider becoming a financial supporter of your North Idaho Centennial Trail so that it will always remain an integral part of your community.

Spring Clocks Forward March 8th - PLUS - Helpful Tips on How to adjust to the time change

Daylight Savings Time is March 8th, 2009 at 2:00 A.M

Did you know that Daylight Savings time starts on March 8th?  Please move your Clocks FORWARD 1-Hour at 2:00 a.m.  This change will be in effect until November 1st, 2009.

Here are some helpfull tips on how to adjust to the time change:

  • Move bed time forward 5-15 minutes a night for several nights leading up to the change so it doesn't have to be all at once.

  • This may also be a good time to adjust your child's sleep schedule. If you have a baby that has been waking up too early (like 6 am and you prefer 7 am) you could put them to bed at a later bedtime and they would be on a new schedule.

  • Expose your yourself and kids to daylight early on in the day. Experts say this resets your internal clock and helps your body readjust. Open blinds and curtains first thing when we wake up, it helps my transition to daytime.

  • Some sleep experts suggest to wake kids up at the regular time in the morning, even if they are still tired. They may be cranky a day or two, but will quickly readjust.

  • Most experts also suggest an extra SHORT nap to help you and/or your child adjust. This article on the University of Michigan's Health System site affirms that as well as many of the aforementioned tips.

Many experts agree most should adjust to the time change within a few days, but while adjusting children may be irritable, cranky and hyper because of the loss of sleep and change in schedule.

NOTE:  Also, be Sure to change the batteries in all of your devices such as carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, as well as flashlights, clocks, remote controls and other battery operated devices.

Your Pet Can Kill You! OR, Have Dog, Will Travel

Don't Let Your Pet Kill You in an Accident  -  30,000+/-  Accidents a year are caused by dogs in the front seats."

The Laws of Physics don't stop. In a 35 mph crash 60 a pound pet becomes about 2,700 pounds of force (about the same as two full grown, male grizzly bears). Many people allow their pets to scoot around, unrestrained, in the back seat of the car or in the bed of a truck. It's safer for everyone in the vehicle if a dog or cat is restrained. A recent American Automobile Association (AAA) survey found, "A large number of accidents, something like 30,000 a year, are caused by dogs in the front seats."  Buckle up your pets in a car or truck to protect you, your pet and your passengers. If you have an accident, your pet can become a projectile.

Maddie Riding Shotgun in the MotorhomeAccording to the Bark Buckle UP Web site, 82% of dogs travel in vehicles on family vacations. A

Dr. Alicia Faggella, a Portland, Oregon, veterinarian who has had advanced training in emergency and critical care, cites several reasons why pet owners should buckle up their dogs and cats:

  • Pets can cause an accident by jumping into the driver's lap, distracting the driver, or blocking the driver's vision. Small dogs can also get under the pedals;
  • Pets can become "missiles" if they're in an accident - or if the driver makes a hard stop or quick turn. This can kill or severely injure not only the animal, but also the people in the vehicle;
  • When left unrestrained in a parked car, pets can dislodge the parking brake, causing the car to roll down a hill - into another car or person;
  • Unrestrained pets in the back of a pick-up can be severely injured or killed by falling or jumping out of a moving vehicle or hitting the cab when the truck stops short.
  • An unrestrained pet is at risk of falling out of open windows in a moving vehicle, and is at risk of escaping at rest stops when car doors are opened. Dogs and cats can also be killed or injured by airbags and should always be placed in a seat that does not have airbags if the bags can't be turned off.

In an accident, animals may run loose and create problems for firefighters, emergency medical personnel and police officers responding to the already-chaotic scene of a vehicle collision. Dogs shocked from the trauma of an accident may snap at or attack strangers and could delay rescue efforts of their injured owners. After an accident, unrestrained pets can be injured and trapped under cars or may run into traffic and be hit or killed and cause another accident. Often, there aren't sufficient responders to deal with pet problems at an accident scene.

Anything done to get animals out of the front seat or restrain them will keep pets and passenger safer. Seatbelt harnesses can be purchased at local pet stores. Most harnesses have leash attachments and can be used outside of the car to walk your dog. There are other types of car restraints for pets besides a harness: a zip line that secures a dog but also lets it move back and forth, and a back seat barrier that creates a wall between the front and back seats of the car. Do some research and pick the type you think best suited to your pet. Prices for pet restraints start at around $25.

Avondale Golf and Tennis Club - March 2009 Dates to Remember..... See you there!

Avondale Golf Club - Hayden Lake, Idaho

The 18-hole "Avondale" course at the Avondale Golf & Tennis Club facility in Hayden Lake, Idaho features 6,573 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 74 . The course rating is 77.8 and it has a slope rating of 142 on Blue grass.  Designed by Melvin Hueston, the Avondale golf course opened in 1968.

This tree-lined course was designed with the thinking golfer in mind. Experienced golfers will quickly learn that you don't have to use your driver on every hole. However, some of the par 4's are long, and some par 5's feature dogleg fairways. Mark Rathert redesigned and oversaw the recent course renovations. "Golf Digest" rated this course the 5th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996.

Coeur d'Alene Idaho is listed as one of the 'Great Towns of America' 2009

Couer d'Alene and Sandpoint, Idaho, are in the top 100 'Great Towns of America' Premier National Guidebook.

Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Coeur d'Alene Resort were just two of the things that helped put Coeur d'Alene in "The Great Towns of America," a book listing the top 100 cities for a "Vacation or a Lifetime."

The brand new and fully revised second edition of the premier national guidebook, The Great Towns of America, was just released on January 1, 2009.

Mudgy the Moose, Millie the mouse - Lake Coeur d'Alene, IdahoTwo of the Greatest Towns listed in this book are here in North Idaho!  Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint Idaho!

These two towns are only about 45 miles away from each other and are considered to be two of the nation's most favored communities. They have both urban charms and unforgettable settings.  They are  fun-filled getaways with enough recreational and cultural highlights to make them worthy vacation towns and/or as the best places for you to call home.

Centenial Trail - North Idaho College - Coeur d'Alene, IdahoCoeur d'Alene beat out every other town in the Rocky Mountain region for its summer weather and a lake that is warm enough to swim in.  That was just one of the many aspects of this city that landed it in this publication!

Coeur d'Alene - MuseumAccording to the writer "Coeur d'Alene is now one of the largest and liveliest vacation destinations in the northern Rocky Mountains."  "One of America's best resorts connects a picturesque downtown to a superb lakefront park with colorful gardens, tree-shaded picnic sites, a scenic promenade by a long sandy beach, swimming areas, a handsome museum and a municipal pier for a variety of lake cruises."

The author also said he is certain the North Idaho economy will make a comeback and that people use this book to help make a decision on where to visit and where to live.
