What happens when a moose and a mouse decide to play hide-and-seek in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho?
Answer: The City of Coeur d'Alene creates a 2-1/4 mile Adventure Trail lined with 5 Life Size Bronze Moose and Mice statues and calls it the Mudgy Moose Trail.
What's it all about? A new childrens adventure book that centers around Lake Coeur d'Alene.
This charming tale for children is all part of a public art project funded by a grant from the Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission. As an accompaniment to the book, the town of Coeur d'Alene has commissioned a local artist, Terry Lee, to create 5 life-size bronze statuesof Mudgy and Millie, which will be placed at strategic points along Mudgy's route-now officially christened the Mudgy Moose Trail.
The Trail begins at the base of Tubbs Hill in Downtown Coeur d'Alene. For the more adventuresome, Mudgy actually begins his search for Millie at the southern most tip of Tubbs Hill, about a half mile down a dirt path that circles Tubbs Hill. (Tubbs Hill, a natural area next to The Coeur d'Alene Resort surrounded by a two mile hiking trail, was named for an early Coeur d'Alene resident.)
The trail then follows a 2 1/4 mile route to the Coeur d'Alene Library, then through the Downtown area, around the Resort's famed boardwalk and through the City Park before ending at Independence Point overlooking the lake.
In this story, Mudgy Moose searches high and low for his friend Millie Mouse, but Millie has found herself a very clever hiding place. Mudgy wanders from the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alenethrough the picturesque town of Coeur d'Alene and then back to the lake before he finally discovers where Millie has hidden. Mudgy's quest is whimsically illustrated with sparkling watercolors by award-winning artist and children's book author Charles Reasoner. Sales of the book will benefit the Coeur d'Alene Public Library Foundation.
Be sure to support our Local Library and purchase a Mudgy the Moose Book. Mudgy & Millie will be available at your favorite bookseller or gift shop beginning September 13th, 2008. Pre-orders may be made by contacting the publisher, Eastern Washington University Press at www.ewu.edu/ewupress.
I'm looking forward to joining Mudgy and Millie on the Trail after I purchase my own copy of the book. I'll remember to take lots of pictures for everyone. Better yet, set a date to buy your copy of the book and take to the trail!

Good news Coeur d'Alene, Idaho! Homeowners with adjustable-rate-mortgages who are in hardship should be able to benefit from Idaho's $100 Million share of Mortgage Revenue Bonds. The Idaho Housing and Finance Association will administer much of the funding in Idaho. This is all part of the Federal Housing and Economic Recovery Act that was signed into law on July 31st, 2008.
The bill gives the Federal Housing Administration authority to ensure refinancing for borrowers in trouble. It is a foreclosure rescue plan in which lenders would refinance homeowners with sub-prime loans into fixed-rate, 30-year mortgages backed by the FHA. This should be a boon for first-time home-buyers and homeowners struggling with sub-prime loans, as well as the mortgage industry.
This money will also be available to finance loans for 750 more households on top of the 5,000 financed within the past 12 months. It should also allow 150-200 more people to access counseling.
This bill also provides for the tax credit of up to $7500 for first time home buyers or those that have not owned a home in at least 3-years.
For the past several years, the National Association of Realtors including the Idaho Association of Realtors, have aggressively lobbied for Congress to pass numerous provisions found in this historic bill. It is my sincere hope that this bill will help boost the economy by providing more housing opportunities for Idahoans.

Speak up if you don't want DPA - Down Payment Assistance to go away on Oct 1, 2008 !A Buyer with no money down already has very few finance options in which to purchase a home. Now it is going to be even worse!
Just a few short weeks ago President Bush signed into law legislation that contained a provision to eliminate charitable down payment assistance, effective October 1, 2008. This is a program has helped over 1,000,000 families purchase a home. Approximately 80% were 1st time home buyers and it was reported that 94% met their mortgage responsibilities!
If we act IMMEDIATELY, we do have an opportunity to get DPA back but it has to happen no later than September 30th, 2008.
The very day after Bush took DPA away, Congress introduced bipartisan legislation H.R.6694 that would reauthorize, reform and save charitable down payment assistance. H.R.6694. However, this must be passed by September 30thand we need your help! Its time you tell your elected officials in Congress that you support downpayment assistance and urge them to support H.R.6694.
Go to: http://www.supporthomeownership.org/ and voice your support of Downpayment Assistance in your communities, to your elected officials. This page is being updated continually and can be used to find Events, Rallys and Town Hall meetings happening in your communities.
All Real Estate professionals, Lenders and Homebuyers etc... need to voice their support for this critical issue. Our elected officials need to be educated on the impact the prohibition of non-profit downpayment assistance will have on our communities, the entire home buying chain, and the economy.

Coeur d'Alene is #3 on the Small Cities List of "Best Cities to do Business."
This list is an annual guide to the places in the US that are thriving even in an economy that is considered to be in a Recession. The list also focuses on Short and Long Term growth. It tells where jobs are being created and where the momentum is shifting. If you are an entrepreneur, this suggests the best places to locate or expand your business.
Joel Kotkin and Michael Shires have written a great article about the "Best Cities to do Business List" - http://www.inc.com/articles/2008/07/where-are-the-best-cities-to-do-business.html

Annual Dryer Maintenance is a MUST. Build up of lint in your dryer vent or trap is flammable and can set fire by the heating element in the dryer or by a spark from the motor or switch.
Put this on your ANNUAL August calendar:
Clean lint build-up from vent system. Here is a quick "How To:"
Look at the back of your dryer. There is a 4-5 inch round pipe that goes from your driyer through the wall of your house to the outside. Outside there is a "flap vent" that swings open automatically from air pressure when the dryer is running, then closes when the dryer shuts off. The entire piping and flap vent should be inspected and cleaned of lint or any obstructions. Seal any hose joints with duct tape.
Clean behind and underneath dryer. Moisture, dirt, and lint tend to accumulate behind and underneath your dryer. Pull the dryer out from the wall and wipe these areas with a damp rag.
Scrub the lint trap. Chemical fabric softeners often clog the small holes in lint traps. Remove the lint trap and scrub it with a soft bristle brush and mild soap or detergent. This is in addition to your removing lint from the trap after each and every load.
Not only will these maintenance tips help prevent fire, they will also prolong the life of your dryer.
The above steps should be done in addition to daily cleaning of the Lint trap. And should be done more offten depending on how much use your dryer gets.
Russel Ray, San Diego home inspector (Property Consultant) has also contrbuted some great tips for regular maintenace in the comments section of this blog.

Today, the remote 20-acre parcel is genuinely deserving of its new name, "Peace Park." No longer a harbor for hate, it now serves as silent testimony to a community of people who fought hate, and won.
Recently a young, family contemplating relocating to Hayden, Idaho, called to ask me about a rumor they had heard from friends that Hayden Idaho could be a Racist community. What they were referring to was a very isolated incident that hit national headlines in 1999.
This was not the first time I had been asked this question. Unfortunate, since this is NOT what Hayden or Hayden Lake are about. The dedicated "Peace Park" is evidence of this and the stance on Human Rights.
In a nutshell...From about 1973 until 2001 there was a very small group of Aryan Nations members that resided on a 20 acre parcel in Hayden Idaho. Richard Butler had purchased the property after moving from California to Idaho in 1973. From about 1973 until 2001, the Aryan Nations had its headquarters there. I've lived in Hayden Lake since 1990 and all during that time there were never more than a handful of "Members" residing there.
In September 2000 the Southern Poverty Law Center won a $6.3 million judgment against the Aryan Nations from an Idaho jury who awarded punitive and compensatory damages to Victoria Keenan and her son, Jason, who were attacked by Aryan Nations guards in 1999. As a result of the judgment, Richard Butler turned over the 20-acre compound to the Keenans, who then sold the property to a philanthropist, who subsequently donated it to North Idaho College. The College than designated the land as a "Peace Park." Richard Butler passed away in 2004.
The designation of the 20-acre "Peace Park" should be validation of what our communities are all about and their commitment to Human Rights.
"Attorney Morris Dees pioneer in using 'damage litigation' to fight hate groups", CNN. "Keenan v. Aryan Nations", Southern Poverty Law Center "Richard G. Butler, 86, Dies; Founder of the Aryan Nations", New York Times

I had Relatives visiting from Southern California for the 4th of July week and needed to keep them busy with more than just Boating, Swimming, Golf, floating the river, Shopping and Eating. We had already done all the usual "Worlds Only's," Theme Parks, Water Parks, regular Tourist stuff, etc., etc, during their previous visits.
My Cousin Amy is really cute, thin and fit. So, she of course, decided the 46 mile "Route of the Hiawatha Mountain Bike Trail" was just the thing for us all to do. And I mean ALL. She was not about to let anyone stay behind. So, with her very strong forceful encouragement we filled up 2 Suburbans and headed out on the 45-minute drive to the Montana / Idaho border to conquer The Hiawatha Trail.
Our ages ranged from 8 to 53 and we were a group of 12. We didn't need our own bikes; helmets or lights (for the pitch black tunnels). The Lookout Pass Ski Area provided us with all of that plus our Trail & Shuttle Passes for a very reasonable fee. The equipment was all in good order. You can use your own Mountain Bikes and just purchase the Trail and Shuttle passes. DO NOT forget to bring really good flash lights that fix to your bike or helmet. The tunnels are totally dark as dark can be! If you don't have a light (they are required) you can rent one for $4.00.
Check out the 2nd photo, Tim is displaying "The Hiawatha Stripe." When you are done with this fabulous ride that takes you through many long dark (Very Very DARK) and damp tunnels with water dripping down the tunnel's walls and from talactite looking fingers along the ceiling ... Your backside should look like the PHOTO .... It's actually a Badge of Honor, and proof you completed your mission.
Depending on your enthusiasm, it is either a 30 mile round trip with 2000 feet of elevation change, or 17 miles of level and downhill dirt track with a shuttle bus ride to regain your 1000 foot elevation loss.
Route of the Hiawatha has been called one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country. Winding through eleven tunnels and over nine high steel trestles, past waterfalls, ridge top vistas, wildlife and numerous interpretive signs. These detailed signs provide information about the rich mining and railroading history in this scenic passage way through the spectacular Bitterroot Mountains, famous between 1911 and 1961 as the "Route of the Hiawatha" on the Milwaukee Road between Illinois and Washington.
The 46-mile route crosses the rugged Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana. The route of the Hiawatha is best known for the long, dark St. Paul Pass or "Taft" Tunnel which burrows for 1.8 miles under, yes UNDER the state line. The tunnel, which had been closed for repairs, reopened for use by mountain bikers, hikers, and wheelchair users the end of May 2001.
This is not a trail you'd want to bike in the winter. The snow in these rugged Bitterroot Mountains over the Idaho and Montana border would be tough enough, even without the bears that are rumored to hibernate in some of the tunnels. Some bears like to get started even before the biking season ends - October 2, 2005 - and the trail rangers have to scoot them out in the morning before they open the trail to riders at 8:30 in the morning. It stays open until 6:00 p.m.
Wouldn't you know I'd wait until I'm 50 to finally do it! I was extremely apprehensive since I have not been on a bike in at least 15 years, let alone Mountain Bike w/gears. I was absolutely sure they were going to bring me down in a stretcher. Well, they didn't and I'm ready to go again!
Don't keep telling yourself you're going to do the Route of the Hiawatha Mountain Bike Trail in Northern Idaho someday. I talked about doing it for the past 7-years and just never seemed to get around to it. Well, just get up off that rear end, like we did, and go for it! It is an experience you will never forget. Whether you are 6 or 90, this is an awesome family outing or a rigorous workout depending on how you choose to ride it.

Entering the 1.8 Mile Tunnel on the Route of the Hiawatha Trail. This Tunnel is Darker than Dartk!!

We made it through the first Tunnel. 1.8 Miles of really DARK and WET tunnel. 1909 St. Paul Pass Tunnel 20 on the Trail of the Hiawatha.

Travis Jank, Tanis and Zuriah Irwin (of North Idaho) at the 1st Waterfall on Hiawatha Trail. Wayne Simmons, (of So.CA and North ID) in Background.
Zuriah Irwin pretends to feed chipmunk. These little guys were obviously used to being fed by humans. Never feed wildlife.

The Trestle in the background is one we will be crossing later in the day. Scarry Looking!

We are pausing to get up the nerve to cross the 1st Trestle. Really Scarry High Up!

Katie Simmons (of So.CA and North Idaho)makes it across one of the Hiawatha Trail Trustles. The rest should be a cinch!

Another beautiful waterfall on the Trail of the Hiawatha.

The Shortest Tunnel on the Hiawatha Trail

Everywhere you look is a scene worth painting!

Young deer at mouth of a Tunnel on the Hiawatha Trail.
Zuriah Irwin on one of the Trestle Bridges of the Trail of the Hiawatha. She is a BRAVE one! Just DON'T look DOWN!
Kristen Simmons (of So.CA and No. ID) It was tough to keep up with her on the trail!
Our Group (most of us) on the Trail of the Hiawatha. Joe Amlani, Wayne, Kirsten, Amy and Katie Simmons, Zuriah and Tanis Irwin, Travis and Tim Jank. Erik and Shannon Simmons (of So.CA) not in photo.

We ended our day with a great Porterhouse Steak and Pepper Bridge wine at the Wolf Lodge Inn, Coeur d'Alene, ID.

Joe Amlani (of So.CA) treated us all to a fabulous steak dinner, rocky mountain oysters and Pepper Bridge wine. Thank you Joe. You are the greatest!
I have many great photos of the Hiawatha Trail but don't want to spoil it for you. You'll just have to see the rest of it for your selves!

All of this is at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds August 20-24th, 2008.
Fairgrounds Directions & Address: (4-Miles North of Downtown Coeur d'Alene)
To get to the Fairgrounds, take Exit 12 off Interstate 90 and proceed North
for approximately one mile. Turn right on Kathleen Avenue, then left on Government Way.
The Fairgrounds will be on your right. 4056 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho 83815
A bit of History on the Fair: The North Idaho Fair started from humble beginnings about 85 years ago to grow into the five-day, community-wide entertainment and educational event that it is today.
In the early 1950s the county and city made plans to trade the original downtown fair site for a parcel at the city-owned airport known as Weeks Field. That 110 acre land swap marked the beginning of the fair as it is today. A few years later livestock barns were moved to the site and two Quonset huts were added for exhibition space. The grandstand was built in 1958. Pari-mutuel horse racing started in 1965 and continued until 1983. Those decades saw the addition of other buildings, including several that were moved from Farragut Naval Station and the Beauty Bay CCC grounds.
Improvements continued to be made yearly. The use of the grounds has expanded to include auctions, banquets, wedding receptions, trade shows, science fairs, high school graduation parties and more. Two big facility improvements came when a donation of $50,000 from the Chamber of Commerce sparked the construction of the food court. And then came the addition of the Jacklin Building in 1989.
The County took some of the 110 acres for other purposes. This left the Fairgrounds with only 83 acres. Currently, the Fair board and management are exploring the possible addition of an events center.
